You've achieved first-time accreditation, committed to following the Standards, and now you are ready to demonstrate your continued commitment to excellence, trust and permanence. This page will give guidance on setting up your land trust for a successful application process but make sure to have a good understanding of the process steps and the value of renewal before you dive in.

Start Planning

As soon as your land trust is accredited it can begin to take steps to help prepare for renewal. For instance:

  • Sign up for and read our e-Newsletter, which contains important news and tips.

  • Most land trusts that achieve accreditation for the first time are also issued "Expectations for Improvement" (EFIs); some land trusts are issued EFIs as part of a compliance confirmation process or their next renewal. It is never too soon to think about how your land trust will address EFIs. Review any EFIs your land trust received; address any EFIs for creating templates, updating templates, etc. right away and create a strategy for identifying opportunities to address any other EFIs that are more situational. Document when progress is made to address them. View the XXX page for more guidance.

  • Keep track of the isolated and rare instances during your accredited term when Standards and Practices were not followed, and the circumstances, so you can readily document this at renewal. This documentation allows the Commission to evaluate the facts and circumstances and determine the appropriate corrective action.

  • Read the Requirements Manual at least annually to become aware of and better understand any changes to the program and accreditation requirements that were published after your land trust was accredited.

Your land trust should also ensure your board is invested in the renewal process. Starting the conversation early can help with board support and bolster the planning process. Check out resources you can share to get started.
